Cain: Junior's decision to sit out is absolutely right

The decision for NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr. to sit out this weekend's Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire was actually an easy one. The absolute right one. Doctors are concerned that Earnhardt has suffered another concussion, or at least concussion-like symptoms and have recommended his body must heal. He may even miss next week's race at one of the sport's most legendary venues, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Should he need to do so, his former Hendrick Motorsports teammate and longtime friend Jeff Gordon has graciously offered to step out of retirement and drive Earnhardt's famous No. 88 Chevrolet -- allowing Earnhardt another week of healing. Should the 41-year-old need to sit out the rest of the season, that's fine, too. And should NASCAR's reigning 13-time Most Popular Driver ultimately find out that he needs to unstrap for good, how admirable and inspiring that he could make that decision, too. Collective gasp. That's right. At only 41 years old, Earnhardt still has a lot of wonderful, memory-making days ahead -- perhaps on the race track and certainly off the race track. How good and fortunate that he is driving in an era when his symptoms could be properly diagnosed and addressed. And that both his boss, Rick Hendrick, and "Junior's" massive legions of fans, would fully understand and support his healing outside the cockpit of a race car. "The most important thing in this whole process is for Dale to get better and feel better; and we're going to let that happen on the timeline it's going to happen on," Hendrick Motorsports General Manager Doug Duchardt said Thursday. And in the good old days, Tim Flock drove with a monkey in his car. But this is NASCAR in 2016 -- with digital dashboards, million-dollar paychecks and best of all, the very tops in modern medical treatment. Thankfully, Earnhardt doesn't have to feel compelled to drive when he is not right, when he is suffering from concussion-like symptoms. It's not only best for him to heal up, but also best for the entire starting field that he heal up. "For him to step out of the race car, it must be something serious," driver Carl Edwards said Friday at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. "I hope he recovers quickly and, second, I have a lot of respect for making the decision. I can't imagine how tough that decision would be. "Right now with the format, you do have the opportunity to take care of yourself, do what you think is right and still have a shot at the championship." RELATED: Drivers react to Junior's health news Beyond his massive NASCAR superstardom, Earnhardt is a rather "regular" guy. He drinks beer with his buddies and loves to spend time with his family. He's engaged to Amy Reimann, and they are set to be married soon. And who knows if a Dale Earnhardt III might follow in the near future. The right decision this week -- and next week, and the next week -- is vital not just to his racing career, but for his life. It's good that Earnhardt is listening to doctors, even when their news is troubling to hear and their instructions are tough to swallow. This isn't the first time Earnhardt has been sidelined because of concussion-like symptoms and that makes the current situation even more significant. In 2012, Earnhardt missed races in Charlotte and Kansas because of a concussion likely suffered in a hard crash during a test at Kansas Speedway. This time, he's not even sure where exactly he may have been injured. He crashed hard at both Michigan and Daytona in the past month. This past week Earnhardt thought he was fighting a severe sinus infection, but returned to the doctors when medicine seemed ineffective. "When that didn't help, I decided to dig a little deeper," Earnhardt said. "Because of my symptoms and my history with concussions, and after my recent wrecks at Michigan and Daytona, I reached out and met with a neurological specialist. After further evaluation, they felt it was best for me to sit out." WATCH: Smith, who filled in for Junior in 2012, weighs in on news And with the new "waiver" rules, Earnhardt potentially could miss races and still be eligible for the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs. He's currently 13th in points. Racing is and has always been such an important, defining part of Earnhardt's life. But, it is not his life. So again, he is serving as an inspiring and fabulous example in times of hardship -- going back to the admirable way he handled his seven-time champion father's death. Not only did he somehow make everyone else feel better then, he had the gumption to get back behind the wheel and continue winning NASCAR's biggest races and the sport's heart. I've known Earnhardt since his very first entrance in NASCAR's big leagues -- from the bleached-blond hair days. And I remember talking to his father about him often. Of course, today, people always ask me about Earnhardt when they find out I report on NASCAR. And the truth is, I have always found him to be someone who speaks from the heart. He seems to find it quite amazing himself, the influence he wields and the people drawn to his every move. He is authentic and modest and seems to be as happy as he's ever been. This story is about a hugely popular superstar smart enough to heal up properly. The hard decision is absolutely the right decision. It is impressive and important. And we all wish him well. "It takes a lot to come out and address some of the health concerns that he had," Duchardt said. "I really commend him for that. The whole time it's not about who are we going to get to back fill, what we are going to do when he does come back it's all about him getting better on a timeline that is satisfied to him. Not anything to do with the Chase, not anything to do with points or anything like that. "Our team supports him 100 percent. We have a relationship that goes beyond driver. How does a doll fit into Darlington's history?
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- NASCAR competitors have driven with good luck charms for probably as long the sanctioning body has been in existence. A rabbit's foot here, a four-leaf clover there, lucky shoes for some, specific pre-race rituals for others. The lucky penny that rode with Dale Earnhardt to his lone victory in the Daytona 500 in 1998 can still be found glued to the dash of the familiar black No. 3 Chevrolet. After winning back-to-back Daytona 500 titles in 1994-95, former driver Sterling Marlin refused to vary from his pre-race routine leading up to the season-opening event. Marlin stayed in the same hotel, in the same room, wore the same T-shirt under his uniform and dined on the same pre-race meal -- a bologna sandwich and soft drink. More of an early marketing stunt than an attempt to reverse his fortunes on the race track, former series champion Tim Flock raced with a monkey named Jocko Flocko riding shotgun for several races in 1953. Which brings us to this weekend's Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway (Sunday, 7 p.m. ET, NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), and the Stock Car Racing Museum located on the grounds of the historic track. Among the several cars on display inside the museum is the race-winning entry from the very first Southern 500 held in 1950. Johnny Mantz, an open-wheel racer who made just 12 NASCAR starts between '50-'56, piloted the black No. 98 Plymouth. Burlington, North Carolina, businessman Hubert Westmoreland was the car's owner. Riding along with Mantz in the car that Labor Day was a child's doll that belonged to the daughter of Alvin Hawkins, a race promoter and flagman. According to reports, the team wanted to remove the doll before the start of the race -- how it got in there in the first place isn't known -- but Lottie Westmoreland, Hubert's wife, convinced them to leave it in the car for good luck. Mantz, in just his third NASCAR start, won by nine laps in a 75-car field that included future Hall of Famers Fireball Roberts, Lee Petty, Cotton Owens and Flock . The doll was taken out and placed in storage following the race, where it stayed forgotten for several years. When track officials donated the car to the museum in 1965, the story of the doll resurfaced; it was located and returned to its rightful place inside the car where it has remained all these years. An arm is missing and the shoes have disappeared as well. Time has taken its toll, understandable given her age. Sixty-five years after Darlington Raceway ushered in a new era in NASCAR and Johnny Mantz roared to a surprising victory, a child's toy is a silent reminder of yesterday.

Family: Bryan Clauson helped save lives as organ donor
Sprint car driver Bryan Clauson, who died Sunday night following injuries incurred during a sprint race, helped better the lives of five people because he was an organ donor, his family announced Wednesday. Clauson crashed Saturday night during a U.S. Auto Club (USAC) midget car race at the Belleville High Banks, a half-mile dirt track in Belleville, Kansas, and was airlifted to a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was pronounced dead late Sunday. Known for his skill in many forms of motorsports, Clauson made 26 career starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. The family's full statement is below. Additionally, NASCAR announced Wednesday it would honor Clauson with a decal on the NASCAR XFINITY Series cars this weekend at Mid-Ohio. The gift of life is the most amazing gesture and Bryan will live on not only through us and all the people he touched along the way, but from the lucky individuals that will benefit from Bryan making a decision to be a donor. It was not lost on our family as we sat huddled around him, holding his hands, comforting him and each other, saying our last goodbye that five families were also sitting in a hospital room somewhere, comforting their loved one and each other while praying for a miracle that Bryan ultimately delivered for them. XFINITY Series drivers share thoughts, memories of Bryan Clauson
LEXINGTON, Ohio -- The NASCAR world continues to mourn the loss of Bryan Clauson, a sprint car driver who died Sunday at the age of 27. Clauson crashed Saturday night during a U.S. Auto Club (USAC) midget car race at the Belleville High Banks, a half-mile dirt track in Belleville, Kansas, and was airlifted to a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was pronounced dead late Sunday. Clauson was an accomplished sprint-car driver, who also made 26 starts in what is now the NASCAR XFINITY Series, will be remembered by teams this weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with a special decal . The Indiana native had several friends and acquaintances in the NASCAR garage including Justin Marks , who is a part-time driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet in the XFINITY Series. "It's incredibly sad," Marks told NASCAR.com. "I met Bryan in 2007 when he was at Chip Ganassi Racing in Nationwide (now XFINITY .) He came through ARCA when I was in ARCA in '06 and '07, so I've known him for a long time. And really just in the last two years, got to know him better just because I got involved in the sport, World of Outlaws and he was around that." Marks co-owns a sprint-car organization, Larson Marks Racing, with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Kyle Larson . After Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series Mid-Ohio Challenge (3:30 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course , Marks is heading out to the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa. Clauson would have competed in the sprint-car event this weekend. "Bryan's a racer, Lauren (his fiancée) is a racer and Tim's (his father) a racer," Marks said. "They're just a racing family. It's all they've ever known." Sam Hornish Jr . (driver of the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet at Mid-Ohio) said the loss is one you never want to hear about. "Racing is such a tight knit community of people," Hornish said. "There's always people that are there even though we are competing against each other, they want to see good things happen to other people if they can. So whenever there is a loss like that, you take it hard regardless of how well you were friends, not friends. Everybody's definitely been thinking about it for quite a bit this week." Ty Dillon (driver of the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet), who has dabbled in some racing outside of NASCAR, called Clauson "a highly admired person" who is "going to be missed." "Everybody's got heavy hearts for the Clauson family," Dillon said. "… It's just sad. You feel for his family and you pray for them to be able to get through." Clauson had set a preseason goal of competing in 200 open-wheel races this year. That schedule included a start in the 100th Indianapolis 500, where he placed 23rd in his third effort at the famed Brickyard. According to Indianapolis Motor Speedway , Clauson had accumulated 27 wins in 116 races this season. "Bryan Clauson is the only guy in history to lead the Indy 500 (led three laps in the 2016 race) and win a 4/10 sprint car feature in the same day," Marks said. "That's a racer. They don't make them like that very much anymore."
