Weather delays Friday's on-track action at Daytona
RELATED: Live weather updates from Daytona Inclement weather rolled into Daytona International Speedway on Friday, interrupting NASCAR XFINITY Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying midway through the first of two scheduled rounds. Twenty-two cars attempted laps before NASCAR halted the session for lightning with David Ragan atop the leaderboard. Qualifying did resume shortly after 3:30 p.m. ET NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying got underway at 4:50 p.m. ET (NBCSN, Live Extra). Weather washed out most of Thursday's on-track activity, as only one NASCAR XFINITY Series practice was completed. Two Sprint Cup practices and XFINITY final practice were canceled on Thursday. The Sprint Cup cars were on the track Friday morning for a rescheduled practice, the only practice before Saturday's Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola (7:45 p.m. ET, NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Brian Scott t led that practice, a 45-minute session during which Kyle Busch wrecked hard into the outside wall. Busch was evaluated and released from the infield care center, but he will have to go to a backup car. The XFINITY Series' Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola is scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET (NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Tifft to undergo surgery to remove brain tumor
RELATED: Matt Tifft, NASCAR Next driver Joe Gibbs Racing issued a medical update on XFINITY Series and NASCAR Next driver Matt Tifft on Tuesday, announcing the 20-year-old will undergo surgery for removal of a low-grade glioma in the brain. Per the team release, the slow-growing tumor was found during treatment and evaluation for a recent disc condition in his back. Tifft is expected to undergo surgery and rehabilitation soon and once cleared by physicians is expected to return to racing. The release noted the JGR rookie is anxious to return to the race track as soon as possible. As stated, I will be undergoing a brain tumor removal surgery after a scan during back procedure. Tifft was replaced by interim driver Sam Hornish Jr . earlier this month at Iowa Speedway . Hornish won the race, leading 183 of 250 laps. David Ragan has been enlisted to drive the No. 18 Surface Sunscreen/Rugged Maniac Toyota Camry XFINITY series entry for Joe Gibbs Racing for Friday's Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN).
Allgaier comes up short in Daytona's reviewed finish
RELATED: Results " Chase Grid " Standings DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The fast and furious finish in Friday night's Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola didn't go Justin Allgaier 's way, but the JR Motorsports driver still managed a smile afterward. "When you come home second two restrictor-plates races in a row with fairly non-torn up race cars, it does make it nice," the No. 7 Chevrolet wheelman said. "But still this one's going to hurt for a little while." Aric Almirola and Allgaier were running first and second, side- by -side during an overtime finish when the caution flag appeared for the final time at Daytona International Speedway . Officials didn't immediately throw the caution when an eight-car crash on the backstretch unfolded on Lap 103 of the originally-scheduled 100-lap race, and it appeared the battle for the win might go all the way down to finish line in the NASCAR XFINITY Series event. But eventually the yellow caution lights flashed, and Allgaier was left to wonder if he or Almirola was out front at the crucial moment. WATCH: Final XFINITY Series restart at Daytona "The last restart was crazy," Allgaier said. "Coming down to the end of the race there we knew it was going to be all out and everyone was going to do everything they could to get to the end. T.J. Majors, my spotter, he called the crash off of Turn 2. I pulled to the outside of Aric just trying to get any run that I could and actually had some momentum and then kind of stalled out in the middle of (Turns) 3 and 4. "Had some momentum coming back and unfortunately the (caution) light switch flipped maybe a 16th of a foot too early for me to get the win." Teammates Chase Elliott and Elliott Sadler finished ninth and 18th, respectively. Had Allgaier been flagged the winner Saturday night, it would have been a sweep of the plate tracks for JRM. Elliott won the season-opener here in February while Sadler scored the victory at Talladega Superspeedway . "I told them before the race this is the best race car I've ever had at a superspeedway," Allgaier said. "We came really close to sweeping all the restrictor plate races this year at JR Motorsports and that's a testament to the guys back at the shop, the Hendrick engine department, everybody that's involved in these cars. It's a lot of fun when you know that your race car is capable of winning every week." Ryan Sieg , Joey Logano and Brendan Gaughan completed the top five. The race was slowed by eight cautions and was red-flagged for nearly eight minutes for a 14-car crash -- the "Big One" -- on Lap 16. Friday's race rekindled memories of the Talladega finish, which also required video evidence to determine a winner after the caution appeared as Sadler and Brennan Poole battled for the lead. Allgaier said he did not question the timing of Saturday's final caution call but he wasn't in a hurry to lift and possibly throw away a win either. "I think Aric and I ran the whole rest of the lap, even after we got through the debris, trying to just be a little bit faster than other one, stay out in front, maybe that would be the determining factor," he said. "It's so hard. At the point we were at, I don't know if it would have been better to (race) back to the line. It's the same scenario as Talladega. … If they call it a little bit before, we're ahead, if they call it a little bit later, we're ahead. But right where they called it we were behind. It is what it is. "When they come down to the end like that you know it's going to be crazy. … Unfortunately, we were just a little bit behind." The runner-up finish kept Allgaier fourth in points. Daniel Suarez remains the points leader in spite of a 32nd-place finish caused by a crash that sidelined the Joe Gibbs Racing driver after just 48 laps. He now leads Sadler by six points (499-493).
Erik Jones, Ragan go 1-2 in XFINITY Series practice
RELATED: Practice 1 results Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Erik Jones and David Ragan topped the charts in opening NASCAR XFINITY Series practice Thursday, a session halted early by lightning at Daytona International Speedway . Jones drove JGR's No. 20 Toyota to a best lap of 193.353 mph around the 2.5-mile track. He was just .011 seconds ahead of teammate Ragan, who posted a 193.307 mph lap as he substitutes for NASCAR Next driver Matt Tifft , who is scheduled for surgery to remove a slow-growing brain tumor. Another pair of teammates claimed the third and fourth spots on the leaderboard in preparation for Friday's Subway Firecracker 250 powered by Coca-Cola (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Richard Childress Racing 's Ty Dillon was third in the No. 3 Chevrolet at 192.102 mph, just ahead of Brandon Jones ' No. 33 Chevy (192.045 mph). Justin Marks completed the top five at 192.004 mph in the Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Chevrolet. The first on-track opportunity for XFINITY Series teams was halted 28 minutes into a scheduled 55-minute session by lightning and thunderstorms in the area. The track ordered the grandstands evacuated and the spotters' stand cleared. Thursday's second XFINITY Series practice was canceled due to rain at Daytona International Speedway . The drivers will get back on track at 2:10 p.m. ET on Friday for Coors Light Pole Qualifying (NBCSN).
Suarez's 32nd-place finish shrinks points lead
RELATED: Results " Standings " Updated Chase Grid DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR's XFINITY Series points leader Daniel Suarez wrecked out of Friday night's Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway midway through the event. The accident left Suarez with a season-low 32nd place finish after posting an impressive season start highlighted by 12 top-10 finishes in the first 14 races. That run included his historic maiden victory at Michigan two weeks ago making Suarez the first Mexican-born driver to win a premier series race. His fortune on the Daytona high banks, however, was a low point of his season and threatened to dethrone him from his lead in the series standings. However, Elliott Sadler ran out of gas before NASCAR Overtime got underway in Friday's race and finished 18th, allowing Suarez to hold a six-point lead in the standings after the Daytona event. It was not entirely a surprising outcome according to Suarez who said the racing Friday night was extremely aggressive from the drop of the green flag. "I'm good, I'm just really disappointed," Suarez said after emerging from the infield care center with a clean bill of health. "That's the consequences I guess when racing so hard so early. They were bumping very hard, being aggressive, trying to gain positions before the competition caution. "They were racing like it was the last 10 laps, but it was too early for that." The accident that ultimately sidelined Suarez was his second of the young night. His No. 19 Arris Toyota was initially damaged when Suarez was collected in a 14-car accident on Lap 16 that brought out a 7-minute, 40-second red flag period. He was running in the back half of the field later when his car snapped toward the left and hit the SAFER Barrier lining the track's inside retaining wall. "The car was not right," Suarez said. "I had a car very close to my right side, I was very tight but feel like I barely touched him and I went around unfortunately. I guess that's how it is sometimes on superspeedways." "Everyone wanted track position even before the competition caution. But it was crazy -- three wide -- everyone was bumping. I think I called it one lap before. I told my spotter, 'everything is getting crazy here.' "But I'm fine. NASCAR does a very good job with safety on these cars."
Bubba Wallace talks sponsors, chasing first win
Darrell Wallace Jr . didn't spend his XFINITY Series off-weekend lounging on a Caribbean beach or roaming a new city away from the race track. Instead, the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing driver was behind the wheel. Of a go-kart, that is. "Actually got right into (racing) but not with my (No. 6) guys," Wallace said Wednesday at one of NASCAR's offices in Charlotte, North Carolina. "I went go-kart racing, just try to get back into that and have some fun. Locals whooped me, but still had a lot of fun being able to do that. So, I was still racing, but nothing on the major scale. "(I was) able to learn all the hard (stuff) that went along with go-kart racing. God, it was so tough. I forgot everything that I remember from 13 years ago. Just putting that all together was actually a lot of fun – we had some speed, just the driver forgot how to drive a go-kart," he joked. Lucky for Bubba, this weekend's stage at Daytona International Speedway will be slightly bigger, faster and with a lot more drafting. And while it's not one of Wallace's favorite tracks, it appears he hasn't forgotten how to wheel a superspeedway car: the sophomore driver kicked off the 2016 season with a solid sixth-place result at the Florida track and led multiple laps in the '15 season-opener. Combined with his most recent pair of consecutive top-10 finishes and a runner-up at Dover in May, this weekend's forecast looks more sunny than stormy for the No. 6 driver. "We're just trying to look in-depth at what we're doing for our program and see how we can be better," Wallace said. "We know we're a top-10 race team each and every weekend. We've had some bad luck and some of it's been on us, that we've jeopardized those races and we've ended up outside of that. "But (to have) these last two, now it's starting to get the second half of the season, after that the Chase is starting. So we have to start coming up with a good game plan that we need to bring to each and every track and each and every weekend, so we can unload with a lot of speed and what we need to be competitive. We've been doing that (recently)." They've had additional support off-track as well: Loudmouth Exhaust Systems made its debut on the No. 6 car at Dover International Speedway , where Bubba recorded a career-best second-place result. Since then, the company has graced the car as a primary sponsor for three races and will adorn the No. 6 this weekend at Daytona International Speedway . In a world where sponsorship puts cars on track and lack of it takes names off entry lists, the new partnership has been huge for the 22-year-old racer, who has been transparent about his team's struggles to find primary partners. "Sponsorship is the name of the game," Wallace said. "We're still working hard to find that full-time primary sponsor, but Loudmouth has been a great partner of ours for a number of races now … They've been a huge help to our program to keep us going to the race track each and every weekend. (I'm) trying to do everything I can, as possible, to land that big-time sponsor." Wallace's sponsor schedule has come with some uncertainty -- he said he doesn't even know who is sponsoring his next XFINITY Series race at Kentucky Speedway on July 8. With the goal of landing a full-time sponsor, he's taken a more involved approach than many drivers do, whether it's grabbing lunch with potential partners or meeting with those ready to sign on the dotted line. "I try to be more hands-on, just so I can get a better understanding of what we've got and how I can be better at representing myself for my brand and my team," Wallace said. "I think one thing that's powerful is the drivers gain this personal relationship with the sponsor," he added. “And that's when you see the Lowe's that's with Jimmie Johnson , you see those M&M's with Kyle (Busch) -- they have this great relationship with the driver. There's no middle man and I think that's important." He'll have another chance to impress Loudmouth -- as well as other potential partners that Wallace says are in the works -- this weekend at Daytona International Speedway with Friday's Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Another top 10 would be great, but a win would be even better for the young driver. "(I'm) excited to have them back on the car at Daytona," Wallace said. "Hopefully we can bring the same amount of luck with them and get a win."

What rust? Hornish stomps field en route to Iowa win
RELATED: Complete race results NEWTON, Iowa -- Sam Hornish Jr ., who hadn’t been in a car in 210 days, gave himself the perfect Father’s Day present on Sunday -- a dominant victory in the sixth annual NASCAR XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen at Iowa Speedway . Hornish, who last competed in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race last November at Homestead-Miami Speedway , received a call Monday from Joe Gibbs Racing to substitute for injured driver Matt Tifft . He made the most of the opportunity, picking up his fourth career XFINITY Series win and second at Iowa. Overall, it was JGR’s ninth triumph in 14 races this season. “I don’t know, it doesn’t get much better than that,” said an emotional Hornish in Victory Lane. “Just gotta thank Toyota, everyone from Joe Gibbs Racing for getting me out here and giving me this opportunity. Got my wife and kids here, it’s the first time the kids got to be here for one of dad’s wins. “I can’t tell you what this means to me. I worked so hard to try to get a win when I had my kids here. Gotta thank God. He makes things happen. I was so nervous on Friday getting into the car thinking I’m going to make a mistake, and man, to go out there and win the way that we did. Just can’t say anything more about it." Ty Dillon attempted to make a charge on Hornish on a Lap 224 restart, but settled for second, finishing ahead of Brad Keselowski . "I don't know, I guess we just needed to be a little bit better,” Dillon said. “The No. 18 (Hornish) was so dominant on the bottom (groove). I thought, obviously, we were the best car on the top (groove). "Just needed a little bit more speed. I'm proud of my guys. We were kind of a mid-pack car and did what we needed to do to put ourselves in position -- something we talked about all week -- and we did a great job." Hornish took the lead from last week’s XFINITY Series winner Daniel Suarez on Lap 24, setting the tone that the Joe Gibbs Racing cars were going to be hard to beat. The two drivers swapped the lead on pit road on two occasions before several competitors elected to use varying pit strategies following the event’s third caution on Lap 126. Hornish restarted sixth, but only took 13 laps to get back to the race lead, passing Suarez on Lap 139 and never relinquishing. Championship contender Erik Jones , who scored his fifth pole of 2016, had to drop to the rear before the race for an unapproved body modification. Jones, however, was never a factor as he battled fuel pressure issues, finishing 27th. The NASCAR XFINITY Series takes a week off before returning to Daytona International Speedway on July 1 for the running of the Subway Firecracker 250 .
