JTG Daugherty Racing adds Burnett, Cope to team
RELATED: Learn which drivers, crew chiefs are on the move AJ Allmendinger will have a new crew chief and JTG Daugherty Racing will have a new director of competition as Randall Burnett and Ernie Cope have joined the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series organization. The team made the announcement Thursday via news release. Burnett previously served as lead race engineer at Chip Ganassi Racing , working with drivers Jamie McMurray (2010-12), Juan Pablo Montoya ('13) and Kyle Larson ('14-15). It will be his first stint as crew chief. In total, Burnett spent 10 years at Chip Ganassi Racing , where he also served as a 7-post analysis engineer, a lead team engineer and a data acquisition engineer. "I know the quality of work they do and the level they hold themselves to," Burnett, a native of Fenton, Missouri said. "Also, working with AJ is going to be exciting for me. We kind of grew up with the same background. AJ obviously had a tremendous amount of talent and is very passionate and very vocal about his passion." Burnett, a former Late Model racer, received a mechanical engineering degree from UNC Charlotte. "What I really like about Randall is that even though he hasn't been a crew chief, he's done every role you can ask for," Allmendinger said, "whether it's as a driver, car chief, engineer, test team or building race cars. "I think we are going to speak the same language pretty quickly. I know his knowledge is going to help us." The 2016 season will be Allmendinger's 10th, and his third (full-time with JTG) since taking over the No. 47 entry. He scored his first career victory in 2014, winning at Watkins Glen and earning a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup . He subsequently finished 13th in points, his best points finish to date. Burnett replaces the team’s former crew chief, Brian Burns. For Cope, it will be a reunion of sorts. The Tacoma, Washington native served as a crew chief in 2006-07 for the team’s drivers, Stacy Compton and Marcos Ambrose , in what is now known as the NASCAR XFINITY Series. In 2015, he guided Chase Elliott to the runner-up honors in the XFINITY Series this past season while at JR Motorsports. He also has led Kevin Harvick to 12 wins in the series. Cope, 46, will oversee development of the cars how they are built, and will likely work closely with Richard Childress Racing officials, with whom JTG Daugherty Racing has a technical alliance. "I'll make sure … Randall has exactly what he needs to be competitive," Cope said. "It's going to be his first shot at being crew chief and he's the right guy for the position. "I feel 100 percent in my heart that he is going to succeed and I'm going to help him succeed." Allmendinger failed to make this year's 16-team Chase field, and finished 22nd in points. An accomplished road racer, he scored poles at both NASCAR road-course stops this past season, starting out front at Sonoma and Watkins Glen.
Coming soon: Contract extensions for No. 48 team
CONCORD, N.C. -- Contract extensions for six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson , crew chief Chad Knaus and primary sponsor Lowe's are expected to be announced before the start of this year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup . Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick said Tuesday that contract extensions would be finalized within the next week. "It's just a matter of rolling it out; probably next week," Hendrick said following a groundbreaking ceremony for a 45,000-square-foot Axalta Customer Experience Center to be located on the grounds of the Hendrick Motorsports campus. Johnson, 39, is attempting to become just the third driver in series history to capture seven premier series titles, a mark currently shared by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt. A four-time winner this season, Johnson is currently the top seed in this year's Chase with one race remaining to determine the 16-team field, this weekend's Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR). With 74 career victories, Johnson is only two short of matching Earnhardt's 76-win total. He has won multiple races every year since his first full season, including a career-high 10 in 2007. His five consecutive championships from '06-'10 is a series record. A former off-road racer, Johnson has been paired with Knaus since Hendrick elevated the El Cajon, California, native to a full-time Sprint Cup ride in 2002. Knaus began his NASCAR career in 1991, working with driver Stanley Smith. He moved to HMS in '92 as part of the buildup for the debut of the organization's No. 24 team with driver Jeff Gordon and crew chief Ray Evernham. After winning two championships with Gordon and Evernham (in '95 and '97), Knaus departed for a brief stay at Dale Earnhardt Inc. He reunited with Evernham to help with the return of Dodge to NASCAR in 2000 and the following year he worked as crew chief for driver Stacy Compton and team owner Mark Melling. By season's end, he had returned to Hendrick as crew chief to oversee the No. 48 entry with Johnson as driver and Lowe's as the team's primary sponsor. The three principals have been together ever since. HMS also fields NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entries for drivers Gordon , Dale Earnhardt Jr . and Kasey Kahne . Gordon, a four-time series champion, will retire from driving at the end of 2015 and be replaced by defending NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Chase Elliott beginning next season. In late 2011, officials announced a five-year contract extension that will keep Earnhardt Jr. in the fold through at least 2017. Kahne's contract was renewed late last year and runs through the end of 2018.
Marks returns to the Truck Series with Turn One
CONCORD, N.C. -- Turn One Racing announced Tuesday that Justin Marks will drive the No. 66 Chevrolet full-time in the Camping World Truck Series, starting with the season-opener at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18. The team has also signed a new major primary sponsor with the details to be announced at a later date. "It's a great thing for me personally to have the opportunity to come back into the Truck Series after spending a few years racing in other divisions," Marks said. "I've always had a lot of respect for Stacy Compton and his team, both when it was Wyler Racing and now as Turn One Racing. What's great about being able to experience NASCAR like I did in 2008, and come back after a couple years out of it, is the perspective I've gained from reflecting on that time and learning what kind of program I need to come back to in order to be successful. Stacy has been refreshingly honest with me and given me the blueprint for success in 2011. I'm thrilled for what's ahead and am already working hard on being the best I can be and making this year count." Marks, 29, is coming off of an impressive season in the ARCA Racing Series where he finished sixth in the 2010 driver standings after scoring one win, seven top-five and 13 top-10 finishes in 20 starts. Marks also took the pole at New Jersey Motorsports Park and led 132 laps in the series overall. "We are very happy to have Justin join our driver lineup this season," team owner Compton said. "He is coming off a very successful year in the ARCA Racing Series where he proved his talents as a driver. Adding Justin to our driver lineup will help build our program and put us in a position to win races and championships in the future." Marks made his NASCAR debut in the Truck Series in 2007 and ran a partial schedule in 2008, where he claimed the pole at Texas. In total, Marks has made 22 starts in the series. In the past three years, Marks has also competed in the Nationwide Series, where he made seven starts. Former race winning crew chief and NASCAR veteran Doug Wolcott will lead the team in 2011. Wolcott was most recently a crew chief at Randy Moss Motorsports where he called the shots for drivers Tayler Malsam and David Starr, among others. Prior to joining RMM, Wolcott was a crew chief at Bill Davis Racing, where he guided driver Scott Speed to a win at Dover in May 2008 and helped that truck to 11th place in the owners' standings with four different rookie drivers. "Doug is a guy that has been around this sport a long time and he's worked with and won with young guys," Marks said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and an unmatched work ethic. We already have a good working relationship that's growing by the day so I think by the time Daytona rolls around, we'll be firing on all cylinders. This is the first time in my career that I've been able to bring a crew chief into a program and work with him to build the effort around us and our goals so I'm pretty excited."

Dale Earnhardt-Wrangler deal risky, but paid off big for Richard Childress
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Richard Childress went all in. He wagered everything -- his yesterday, his today and his tomorrow. He bet it on a late-season deal with a driver who was a maverick, and he bet it on nothing more than a sliver of a sponsorship. And at the end of that 1981 season, less than a dozen races after the relationships began, the driver and the sponsor departed. The story could have ended there. Driver gone, sponsor gone and Childress, who had tried to scratch out a living as a racer before going the ownership route, hopelessly broke and perhaps finished with NASCAR. But it didn't. Two years later, both Dale Earnhardt and Wrangler reunited with Childress. The union produced a pair of championships and a slew of wins, and set Childress and Earnhardt on a path of success rarely seen in NASCAR. "I borrowed everything I could on my home; I sold everything I had that I thought I could sell just to run Dale those 10 races," Childress said Wednesday during a celebration at Wrangler's headquarters here in Greensboro. "At the end of it, I was just in debt. I had borrowed money from some folks and everything just to run those 10 races." It's fitting that the celebration of the region's textile community, dubbed Jeansboro Day, took place this week, just as NASCAR's premier series prepares to return to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend. Because it was at Talladega in the summer of '81 that all the pieces first came together that would unite Childress, Earnhardt and Wrangler. "I had already talked to Dale at the track earlier that day," Childress said, "and put our deal together." Later, at the long-gone Anniston Inn just east of the track, he met with Phil Holmer of Goodyear, Wrangler officials and Joe Whitlock, who handled Earnhardt's public relations at the time. Earnhardt had won the 1980 title while driving for team owner Rod Osterlund, but when the team was sold mid-season to J.D. Stacy in '81, the driver wanted out. A deal to run the final 11 races of the season was struck, with Childress and Wrangler. By year's end, Earnhardt had managed six top-10 finishes, but the strong runs were offset by mechanical issues and parts breakage. "We ran good, but I knew we didn't have what it took to run him for a championship," Childress said. Dale Earnhardt talks with Richard Childress after the two reunited in 1984. Dale Earnhardt Jr . remembers that season, in particular his father's second start with Childress. "I remember the race at Bristol where you had the accident on pit road that second race that dad drove for you in 1981," Earnhardt Jr. said Wednesday. "I was there. I know that because one of my most favorite photos of me and my father, they basically had these two tires stacked on top of each other and I'm standing in the wheel to get a better perspective to watch the race. I must have been 7 years old. "But Dad is standing with me and we're both watching the rest of the race; the car is in the background too damaged to continue. But my favorite photo of me and my father actually happened that day at Bristol." At the suggestion of Childress, Earnhardt left at the end of the year, taking the Wrangler funding with him to sign with veteran team owner Bud Moore. Childress hired driver Ricky Rudd, and a late deal put Piedmont Airlines on the car and helped stabilize the organization. Wrangler officials, knowing his dire financial situation, had kicked in an extra $50,000 at year's end to help Childress keep his operation upright. "That really helped me going into the following year," Childress said. What would have he done without it? "It's hard to say," he said. "I never look back. I just look ahead and that was one of those deals that helped me look ahead. I don't know where we would have been without it." Before the '84 season began, Childress said Wrangler officials wanted to reunite, with Earnhardt once again driving the No. 3 Chevrolet. The Earnhardt/Moore union had produced just three wins over the course of two years. Childress was more than willing to agree. "I'll never forget Bud told me at Riverside, 'Boy, that boy will break you,'" Childress recalled Moore telling him of Earnhardt. Instead, the pair flourished. A Legacy Continues In 2010, Earnhardt brought the brand back to the race track for a one-off race, winning the XFINITY Series event that summer at Daytona International Speedway . The car, prepared by his own JR Motorsports group, sported the No. 3 and a paint scheme similar to his father's. He continues to serve as a spokesperson for the company, and says it is "amazing" that the relationship has endured for so long. "My father first had Wrangler on the side of his car at the end of the 1980 season; he won the championship with Wrangler on the quarter panel of his car racing at Ontario in 1980 for the final race of the season," Earnhardt Jr. said. "Then he went into 1981 with Wrangler as a full-time sponsor. And we're still working together today. "I'm very proud of that relationship, very proud that it spanned so many years. Typically, relationships just don't last that long. So it says a lot about Wrangler and what they get out of the sport itself; their connection to race fans and the legacy of the Earnhardt family and Richard, everything that Richard and Dad did together."
