Jones, Reddick chasing two-time defending champ in standings Five races into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, the cream is still on top. Matt Crafton ’s third-place finish last Friday in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway allowed the series points leader to maintain his top spot. Crafton, driving the No. 88 for ThorSport Racing, now has 217 points on the strength of two wins, four top fives and a series-best five top-10 finishes. The 38-year-old Crafton is trying to three-peat as the Camping World Truck Series points champion. Crafton has 343 Trucks races under his fire suit, starting with the Motorola 200 at Fontana back in 2000. His first-ever win was the 2008 edition of the North Carolina Education Lottery. He has a modest seven career wins, but consistency works in his favor. He’s placed among the top 10 in his Trucks races 57.4 percent of the time (197 out of 343). Erik Jones ’ epic battle with Kasey Kahne , which included side-by-side racing for most of the final lap and a photo finish, is the type of excitement NASCAR officials — and fans — want to see. Kahne won the race by 0.005 (that’s not a typo) of a second. The No. 00 Truck failed the post-race inspection for a ride-height violation. Kahne does, however, get to keep the win. Driving the No. 4 for Kyle Busch Motorsports, Jones led 88 of the 139 laps at Charlotte. Jones, who turns 19 on May 30, ranks second in the points standings. He finished 18th last year. Just two points behind Jones in the standings sits Tyler Reddick , who picked up his fourth top-five finish of the year by placing fourth last week. Driving the No. 19 Truck for Brad Keselowski Racing, Reddick already has one more top-five finish than he had in 16 starts as a rookie in 2014. The 19-year-old placed 12th in the standings last year. More than a decade removed from his rookie season in a NASCAR national series, Johnny Sauter is chasing his first-ever Truck Series title. Sauter, who turned 37 earlier this month, ranks fourth in the current standings. His best season was a second-place finish in 2011, and he placed fourth in the standings the past two years. John Wes Townley moved into the top five with a sixth-place finish at Charlotte. Townley doesn’t have a win in his 74 career starts on the circuit. He was 15th in the final 2014 standings, and his best year was an 11th-place showing in 2013. 18-year-old Canadian rounds out powerful ThorSport team CONCORD, N.C. -- In the dead of winter a little more than two years ago, Cameron Hayley took the route of many so-called "snow birds" from his home country of Canada to ride out the harsh February days in the far more temperate climate of Florida. This particular trip, though, wasn't simply a search for warmer weather. It also managed to launch his spring-loaded NASCAR career. Hayley, an 18-year-old driver from Calgary, Alberta, found pay dirt against top-flight short-track talent that February at Daytona International Speedway , claiming the checkered flag in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series portion of the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach tripleheader in 2013. He added his name to a distinguished list of winners, with an up-and-coming Kyle Larson prevailing in the Whelen All-American Series race and former Sprint Cup Series winner Steve Park scoring a resurgent victory in the Whelen Modified Tour event. "It does seem like a long time ago now," Hayley said Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway . "I mean, it was only two years ago, but when it comes down to it -- I've done so much since then." Though the race was an exhibition that paid out no points toward the K&N championship, it helped elevate the stature of an otherwise little-known talent from the Great White North. Fast forward, and Hayley's name takes its place on another list altogether -- as a Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with ThorSport Racing, the championship team the last two seasons. "I think that's kind of what put me on the map with everybody," Hayley said. "Everyone started knowing my name after that and obviously moving to the K&N East Series last year it kind of got me down into the North Carolina, Charlotte-area and I guess people started to know my name more after that. It was kind of that Battle of the Beach when that really sparked people knowing me more." A pair of runner-up finishes in the K&N Series' title hunt the last two years helped that cause. So did his first ventures into the Camping World Truck Series, where he showed speed and landed two top-10s in his first three starts last season. After attracting the eye of team owner Duke Thorson and landing a seat in ThorSport's third truck alongside veteran teammates Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter , Hayley has shown steady growth, even while visiting tracks for the first time in his national series career. Despite the unfamiliarity, Hayley has improved his finishing position each week, capped by last weekend's fifth-place effort at Kansas Speedway . More improvement is the target again at Charlotte, site of Friday night's NC Education Lottery 200 (8:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, PRN, SiriusXM). "It's definitely been tough," Hayley said. "This race is going to be my fifth new track again this year, so adjusting to all the different tracks and having all the tracks being new has definitely been difficult, but ThorSport has given me great trucks week in and week out and, like you said, we've been consistently getting better every single race. And we've had great trucks and had some bad luck, and I think Charlotte is going to be another one where I have lots to learn, but I think we have a great truck here and can do well." The learning curve may have been accelerated by having teammates in Crafton, the two-time defending series champion, and fellow veteran Sauter -- who have a combined 498 truck series starts to their credit. Hayley has 491 starts to catch the two; in the meantime, he's tapping them as a resource for as much advice as he can digest. "Both of them have been a tremendous help for me already," Hayley said. "Like I said, all these tracks have been new to me, so I can study race tapes, videos all I want, but until to you talk to a driver you don't really know a firsthand account of what's happening. Both these guys have helped me a lot. I haven't been quite quick enough to run up beside them during races yet, but I think we're getting there and I think I can learn a lot from that as well." Even though Hayley is still new to the team, Sauter said he likes what he's seen so far in the teenager's composure. "I don't really know him, he's a rookie, new to the deal -- but I think he's got a pretty good head on his shoulders," Sauter said. "I see him doing things that maybe necessarily don't see from a lot of rookie drivers and I think he's taking care of his equipment and showing speed at the same time. I think he’s been top of the board at Atlanta and Kansas, so there's speed there and he's only going to get better, so I think he's doing a great job and I see some things in him that I typically don't see in a lot of young guys at his age and at his experience level." (May 5, 2015) -- Five of the six NASCAR K&N Pro Series race winners in 2015 are 21 years old or younger. The championship points leaders in both the East and West are 17 and 16, respectively. And a 17-year-old just became the highest-finishing female in the 61-year history of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. It is fitting that as fans celebrate Jeff Gordon ’s final year of competition, the ranks of NASCAR are filled with young drivers battling to one day fill that void. And on Tuesday, in a building that honors the sport’s history, NASCAR introduced some of those potential future stars of the sport. During a ceremony at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina, 12 drivers were formally announced as the newest NASCAR Next class, a group of up-and-coming talent that joins the industry program aimed at spotlighting NASCAR’s emerging stars. "The NASCAR Next initiative spotlights the future of NASCAR, a collection of promising young talent who have shown the potential to one day reach the highest level of our sport," said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president for Industry Services. "Alumni – and current members – of the NASCAR Next program are achieving success at the national series level, and we are confident that this class will build upon that foundation of excellence for many seasons to come." Now in its fifth season, the career résumé of NASCAR Next alumni is impressive, highlighted by Chase Elliott ’s 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series championship, Kyle Larson ’s 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award, and Cole Custer ’s September 2014 win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, making him the youngest winner in NASCAR national series history. Jamie Dick , driver/owner of the No. 55 Viva Motorsports Chevrolet, returned to competition at Iowa Speedway on Saturday for the first time since being diagnosed with new onset diabetes in March. It started off with a bang -- literally. While coming back onto the track from pit road, a piece of lead came off of the No. 4 car driven by Ross Chastain , impaling Dick's Camaro in the upper left portion of its windshield. The hit was so hard, it destroyed the laminated windshield and protruded through, hitting and leaving a noticeable dent in Dick's helmet. "It was a rough return (to the track)," Dick joked in between practice sessions for Sunday's NASCAR XFINITY Series 3M 250 (2 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM). "I was following another car out and when we pulled off pit road and got on the race track, I saw a piece of something; I thought it was a brake deck hose because it was silver and cylindrical. When we got down into the corner, I saw another piece of that fly out and I kind of dodged it. "Then a split second after that, the lead hit the windshield. I don't know if it was lead or tungsten, but whatever it was, it hit the windshield. I didn't even see it before it hit, I just saw the windshield cave in and I felt it. I didn't even realize it hit me (in the helmet) until we came in. I might've felt it, but everything happened so fast you don't know exactly when you feel it." Dick was checked for concussion symptoms and cleared in the infield care center and he said he felt "fine." His car, on the other hand, not so much. For a driver that's already conquered a mountain of adversity already this season in the form of his new disease just to get back to racing, Saturday's events certainly didn't make things any easier. Dick immediately received plenty of support from his peers, as Ty Dillon and several other drivers came over to his garage stall after practice ended to check on him. Chastain and team owner Johnny Davis did come by to apologize to Dick and make sure he was OK. "NASCAR was there right away inspecting and seeing what happened," Dick said. "The laminated windshield did its job, which is the good part, and that's something they implemented a year ago or so. That held up or else it would've been a much worse day." While Dick said it isn't really for him to say whether or not the No. 4 team should be penalized for what happened, he mentioned he "would be very surprised if there wasn't one." NASCAR XFINITY Series director Wayne Auton addressed the situation Saturday afternoon and indicated the issue would be brought up during Tuesday's debrief at the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina. "Number one, safety is our biggest concern out of anything that we do in motorsports," Auton said. "It's a sport that there’s 10,000 revolving pieces 24/7 when vehicles are on the race track or they're sitting here in the garage area. "Notoriously, penalties are discussed on Tuesdays and that will definitely be discussing that one Tuesday. Any time that we have found weight coming out of race cars on the race track, we've been pretty harsh about it. We have to be. That's part of it. People are sitting up here in the grandstands and drivers sitting inside these race cars. We'll discuss it Tuesday … pretty confident something will come out of that." NASCAR Next driver to make first national series start at Dover Team Little Racing announced Friday afternoon that it has reached an agreement with ThorSport Racing for a part-time schedule for NASCAR Next driver Jesse Little in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this season. Little, 18, had previously announced that he would make his truck tour debut May 29 at Dover International Speedway . Friday's announcement provided extra detail on his 2015 plans, including the partnership with ThorSport -- winner of the last two Camping World Truck Series championships with veteran Matt Crafton . "To have this alliance and support from ThorSport Racing for my Truck Series Events is a huge step forward for me, Team Little Racing and our partners," Little said in a release provided by his team. "Our goals are to put together solid finishes and represent ThorSport Racing, Duke Thorson and our sponsors including NASCAR Technical Institute and Performance Friction Brakes in a first-class manner." Thorson has fielded trucks in the series since 1996. His three-truck effort this season includes rides for Crafton, Johnny Sauter and rookie Cameron Hayley . "We look forward to supporting Jesse as he makes his transition into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series," Thorson said. "We feel that this alliance with (Little) will assist him in reaching his ultimate goal in NASCAR." Little will have a familiar face atop the pit box in Harold Holly, a 19-time winner as a crew chief in what is now called the NASCAR XFINITY Series. The veteran wrench spent two seasons as crew chief for Little's father, Chad, in both XFINITY and Sprint Cup competition. "Jesse is an impressive young man in so many aspects of life," Holly said. "He's a strong student, treats everyone with respect and is eager to learn new things. From a racing perspective Jesse has won at every level he's competed on, takes care of his equipment, provides his team with good feedback and knows how to pace himself during a race. This partnership with ThorSport Racing will give us a chance to compete at one of the sport's top levels where Jesse can show his skills. "We have solid goals, will work to be a good teammate and always be respectful on the track. As a team we're excited to get to Dover and see what our team can do in our Camping World Truck Series debut." After Richmond triumph, Stewart-Haas Racing driver eyes more wins RELATED: Busch wins at Richmond " Where does he rank in NASCAR.com's Driver Draft? With the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage getting a three-race head-start on the season, Kurt Busch suspects he may have been pressing. There's a certain method to driving all-out in an effort to catch up, but there's also a necessary balance. However delicate that tightrope walk might be, Busch found it last weekend at Richmond International Raceway , assuring his spot in the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs. A change in approach behind the wheel of his Stewart-Haas Racing No. 41 Chevrolet helped him settle in for a relatively smooth march to his first victory of the year. Now with his Chase future virtually secure, his approach may be even less burdensome, beginning in Sunday's GEICO 500 (1 p.m. ET, FOX) at Talladega Superspeedway . "My thought was you've got to go slower to go faster. I think that I might have been driving too hard, too much of a chip on my shoulder, so to speak, to start the year," Busch said Sunday after posting his 26th win in NASCAR's premier series. "But it was playing out well. I mean, we came out of the box at Phoenix with a fifth‑place finish and a chance to win, backed it up with a chance to win Fontana, brought it home third, and then a few weeks of missing it a little bit, and why were we missing it? Well, maybe because I was just overdriving the car. "I think last week at Bristol, that track, if you drove it aggressively, it would pay off, but if you stepped over the line just a little bit, you ended up spun out or wrecked or brushing against the fence, and after the race last week, I felt like, you know, just settle down, get into the groove where you let the race come to you and let the talent of the crew members come into play, and that way we all carry the same weight. I think I was just trying to carry too much weight." Tony Gibson -- Busch's old-school SHR crew chief who prefers tape measures and string to laptops and computer data -- wasn't willing to let the team's quarterback take all the blame for the void in the win column. As well as the No. 41 camp has performed this season, it's easy to forget that the driver-crew chief pairing is only nine races old. The team's first three races of the season were with super-sub Regan Smith behind the wheel while Busch served out a suspension for a behavioral infraction. Since his return, Busch has been a near-continual challenger, seemingly on the cusp of finding Victory Lane most weeks. Gibson says part of the responsibility for getting him there falls on him. "I don't think he drives too hard," Gibson said. "... I think the thing that we missed early is we didn't execute as far as our practice stuff. Should have had a little bit better practice plan of making longer runs and making sure we had long run speed. I know he goes out and he gives you 150 percent every lap, every practice, and I force some of that on him. I said, man, let's just go out there and while we got 'em down, just kick 'em while they're down, try to win every -- set fast time and win every practice. I don't think he overdrove at all. I know he takes a lot of blame on himself and puts a lot of pressure on himself, but as a team we didn't execute on those races. … "He needs to drive as hard as he needs to drive. It's our job to put a car underneath of him that he can run that hard with. Today was proof of that." With the pressure of Chase uncertainty pretty much off his shoulders, Busch's job should become easier -- or will it? The taste of one victory remains sweet, but Busch indicated that team owner Gene Haas' hunger may only be satisfied by wins in bunches. Haas took a chance on the 36-year-old driver by expanding to a four-car operation for 2014, an opportunity Busch almost always expresses his gratitude for in media sessions. But Haas, ever the savvy businessman, clearly expects return on his investment. Busch hopes to deliver. "To win early in the year is special, but you can't hang your hat on it," Busch said. "And last year what I can learn from that situation is developing a new team such as (former crew chief) Daniel Knost and a newer group of guys, I felt the responsibility of being a mentor. This year I feel the responsibility of being the driver and doing my duty because I know I've got the best guy on the box with Tony Gibson, the best lead engineer with Johnny Klausmeier, the best car chief, best front‑end guy, rear‑end guy, tire guy. "Everybody on our team is at a top level so I don't have to do anything other than drive, and that's what Gene Haas wants me to do, and he's not happy with one win. He wants multiple wins. Hemric, Suarez, Jones and Newman placed second through fifth RELATED: Full practice results Cameron Hayley topped the lone NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice session at Kansas Speedway on Thursday afternoon. Hayley, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, made the fastest lap late in the 90-minute session with a speed of 175.798 mph. Another rookie, Daniel Hemric was second in the session with a speed of 175.558 mph. Hemric has made six career Truck Series starts with three coming this year in the No. 14 Chevrolet. A pair of Kyle Busch Motorsports teammates took third and fourth place in the session. Daniel Suarez (175.393 mph) and Erik Jones (175.279 mph) were at the top of the speed chart for most of practice but slipped back near the end of the session. The Kansas race will be Suarez's fifth career Camping World Truck Series start and his fourth this season. He has three top-10 finishes in his three starts so far in 2015. Jones, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, has had three top-seven finishes to open the season and will also be making his first Sprint Cup Series start this weekend. Sprint Cup Series veteran Ryan Newman , who is making his first Truck Series start since the 2013 race at Eldora, came in fifth in practice with a speed of 175.006 mph. Initially, there were supposed to be two practice sessions: a 60-minute one that began at 3 p.m. ET and then a 90-minute session that started at 4:30 p.m. ET. Wet weather in the area delayed trucks from taking the track until 5 p.m. ET for just one practice session of 90 minutes. Just over five minutes into the session, Matt Tifft made contact with the wall in Turn 4 to bring out a caution. On Twitter, Tifft said that he blew a right front tire. The wreck destroyed the team's primary truck, forcing him to a backup. Norm Benning missed the first 30 minutes of the practice as he was serving a practice penalty. Entering the Kansas race, Matt Crafton the two-time defending series champion holds a two-point lead over Tyler Reddick , who won at Daytona in the season opener. Jones is in third place in the standings and just six points back of Crafton, while Crafton's ThorSport Racing teammate Johnny Sauter is fourth in the standings and 16 points back of Crafton. Keystone Light Pole Qualifying is set for 4:45 p.m. ET on Friday with TV coverage on FOX Sports 1.
