Vehicles in all three national series to sport organization's decal Race Centers: Sprint Cup " XFINITY " Camping World Truck For the first time since the season-opening races at Daytona International Speedway , all three national series -- NASCAR Sprint Cup , XFINITY and Camping World Truck -- will race on the same weekend at Dover International Speedway this Friday through Sunday. Heading into Sunday's FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks (1 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM), 63 teams across all three series will proudly display the Autism Speaks puzzle piece decal on their vehicles throughout the weekend. Denny Hamlin , driver of the No. 11 FedEx Cares Toyota, will also include Autism Speaks artwork on his car's primary FedEx Cares paint scheme. Hamlin and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth have launched a text-to-pledge campaign to help raise awareness for Autism Speaks . Junior takes blame for Dover disappointment
Dirty Mo Radio: Discusses key pit-road speeding penalty Carrying the very unofficial title of NASCAR's official grillmaster, Dale Earnhardt Jr . has plenty of experience getting the timing right in his frequent barbecues. Perhaps that's why overcooking his entry onto pit road last weekend at Dover International Speedway left such a sour taste. A crucial pit-road speeding penalty just past the halfway point proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to Earnhardt's chances in the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks . But Earnhardt, in his weekly analysis on the "Dale Jr. Download" podcast on Dirty Mo Radio, said that he was pleased with the speed in his Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 Chevrolet as he twice rallied from deep in the field to a 14th-place finish. "I still had fun driving the car. I hate I fouled up there and screwed up coming onto pit road and disappointed the guys," Earnhardt said. "We just worked so hard to get all that ground back and get back on the lead lap, and I sort of screwed it all up. So that's difficult to deal with but you've got to put it behind you to be able to move on to the next event, and we're going to some tracks where I think we can do really well and I'm looking forward to it." Earnhardt started from the rear of the 43-car field, dropping back during pace laps after the crew was forced to make repairs to the No. 88's rear gearing during Saturday's final practice. Earnhardt lost a lap early, but regained it with some savvy pit strategy from crew chief Greg Ives and the fortunate timing of the race's second caution period. That lead-lap advantage, however, went away with a penalty during the next round of green-flag pit stops. Earnhardt lost two laps in the process, but the net effect wasn't terribly costly in the scope of the season. The 40-year-old driver has already all but sealed his berth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs after posting a regular-season win at Talladega Superspeedway last month, allowing him to take more chances ahead of the 10-race championship fight. "Trying to get everything we can," Earnhardt said. "We can be real aggressive with pretty much everything we do since we have the win and we're locked into the Chase. Sometimes, that's going to bite us, and it bit me today. After that we just worked real hard to get everything else we could out of the race. Ended up gaining a bunch more spots and getting back into the top 15 there, but definitely had a much better car -- a top-five car for sure." While the result was less than desirable, Earnhardt emerged confident that the performance should carry over to the series' October visit to Dover, site of the finale to the Chase-opening Challenger Round. Earnhardt and Co. finished a disappointing 17th at the Monster Mile last fall, but hopes Sunday's comeback-filled effort is something the team can build upon. "Starting in the back definitely made things difficult for us, so I'm pretty happy with the speed in the car," Earnhardt said. "Once we found out we were starting in the back, I really wrote off the result no matter what it was and just wanted to make sure we had good speed, because that track is where we really stumbled last year in the Chase. So we need to run better there for sure later in the season, and I think we've got a good baseline of something that'll work." Before Dover ever comes into view, Earnhardt has more pressing matters in Sunday's Axalta "We Paint Winners" 400 (1 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM) at Pocono Raceway , where he has a recent hot streak cooking. Earnhardt was 0-for-28 for his career at the Tricky Triangle until last season, when he swept both annual events at the Pennsylvania track. If Earnhardt is able to connect for a third straight victory at Pocono, he'll join elite company in NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison and the late Tim Richmond as the track's only three-in-a-row winners. Pocono Raceway president Brandon Igdalsky, on hand in Victory Lane for both ends of Earnhardt's double last season, told Dirty Mo Radio that the effect of his success was palpable. "He takes the lead, and any track, anywhere -- the place goes bonkers and it was the same thing here last year, watching fans' reaction," Igdalsky said. "Then to see him do it a second time and now to be trying to go for what only two drivers have accomplished with winning three in a row, it's going to be quite a feat if he can do it." No. 6 driver climbs out of wrecked car before safety crew arrives RELATED: NASCAR issues penalties following Dover races MORE: NASCAR's Steve O'Donnell discusses safety issue " Bayne wrecks, called to hauler NASCAR handed down penalties Wednesday to Sprint Cup Series driver Trevor Bayne for exiting his car without the supervision of safety officials during last Sunday's race at Dover International Speedway . Bayne, in his first full Sprint Cup season for Roush Fenway Racing 's No. 6 Ford team, was fined $20,000 and placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31. A three-car crash in the 174th lap of Sunday's FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks tangled up Bayne and HScott Motorsports teammates Michael Annett and Justin Allgaier . After Bayne's car skidded to a stop with severe front-end damage, he dismounted during the caution period and walked down the banked track surface in Turn 1 to the awaiting ambulance for the mandatory ride to the infield care center. NASCAR formalized the rule, which is presented as a reminder during each pre-race drivers' meeting, last August after a fatal accident involving three-time premier series champion Tony Stewart . Stewart was driving a sprint car at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park's half-mile dirt track when driver Kevin Ward Jr. exited his car after a crash and was struck and killed. The rule allows a driver to leave his or her vehicle before the arrival of safety personnel in the event of extenuating circumstances, such as fire. Bayne's infraction came two days after a similar incident involving driver Jennifer Jo Cobb , who walked onto the track surface to express displeasure with eventual NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner Tyler Reddick as vehicles circled during the yellow flag. Monday morning, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O'Donnell told NASCAR.com in its weekly debrief that punishment was likely pending. "Both drivers were called to the hauler and we'll look at both of those incidents, like we always do Tuesday but for us it's a safety issue,” O'Donnell said. Johnson chases history this weekend at Dover
No. 48 driver would join NASCAR's elite with a 'Monster Mile' victory DOVER, Del. – With six NASCAR Sprint Cup championships and 73 race victories Jimmie Johnson is the most decorated driver of his era. And yet this Sunday, he still stands to elevate his legacy and join the sport's greats in another milestone. Should Johnson, 39, drive his No. 48 Lowe's Pro Services Chevrolet into Dover International Speedway 's Victory Lane in Sunday's FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks , it would he his 10th win at the famed and feared Monster Mile, putting him in elite "double-digit" company. The last person to win 10 races at a single track was the late seven-time Cup champion Dale Earnhardt at Talladega in 2000. Only three others have accomplished the feat – NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty (at Daytona; Richmond; Rockingham, North Carolina; Martinsville, Virginia; and North Wilkesboro, North Carolina), Darrell Waltrip (Bristol, Tennessee; Martinsville; and North Wilkesboro) and David Pearson (Darlington, South Carolina). And if that weren't impressive enough, Johnson is only 24 laps shy of leading 3,000 laps at Dover. Should he break that threshold he would be one of only seven drivers in history to lead 3,000 miles at a single track. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon is the only other active driver to hit that mark (at Martinsville). In winning this race last year, Johnson led a dominant 272 laps. "It's crazy for me to have this reality,'' said Johnson, who will start 14th Sunday. "It's nothing that I thought would happen. I'm certainly enjoying the moment while I’m here." Beyond the status in the history books, Johnson has often expressed how genuinely honored he is to have his name alongside the NASCAR legends. He has always spoken reverently about the drivers who came before him and even after all he's accomplished Johnson still seems to be the one humbled by the company he's keeping. "If I was able to accomplish it, I'd just be honored to be in that same situation that had been done by Dale Earnhardt Sr.,'' Johnson said. "I never had the chance to race against him. It's one big empty void that I have in my career. I feel is that I never had a chance to be crashed by him or have a tire mark put on my car, to pass (laughing) or to be passed. That whole experience, I didn't have that opportunity and I so wish that I did.'' Johnson's success at the notoriously challenging Dover one-mile concrete oval is especially impressive. The track is nicknamed the"Monster Mile" for a reason – tight, high-banked and physically demanding. There is little room for error on track or on pit road. And yet Johnson has been good here since day one. Literally. In his 2002 rookie year, Johnson swept both Cup races. And he has shown a propensity to get on a roll. He's won back-to-back races three times. He swept the 2009 races at Dover and has won two of the last three here, finishing third to teammate Gordon last fall. "I go all the way back to my first trip here in an ASA (American Speed Association) car and it was love at first site,'' said Johnson, who won the pole and finished eighth in his very first Dover race in 1999. So why has Johnson been able to master the Monster that has challenged so many others? Interestingly, it's the difficulty that intrigues Johnson, not that the track is necessarily easy for him. "I guess to generalize it, it would be the intensity required to run a lap here,'' Johnson said. "It's hard to say that there is one aspect that I enjoy the most, but just the set of corners from straightaway to straightaway. You kind of work up your bravery, you make it through the corner. "You get it on the next straightaway and you smile like, 'wow that was pretty cool. I'm going to do it again. Here we go.' And you fly though turns three and four and you just end up with that mindset around the track. It's tons of fun.'' Nine trophies no doubt make it more fun. "There are a few tracks where I'm in a really neat position to chase history,'' Johnson said. "Again, it's not a situation I ever thought I'd find myself in, but now that I'm here it's certainly in front me. "It's on my mind and it's something I would love to do." They come in all shapes and sizes, symbolizing a significant team or individual accomplishment. In some sports like NASCAR, they are awarded after a race. In other sports like Major League Baseball, the National Football League or the National Basketball Association to name a few, trophies are given out at the end of the season upon completion of each sport's championship round. The trophies themselves can be filled with storied history like the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup trophy. The trophy features every team to win the championship in the NHL, as well as the names of the players on the team and key management personnel. Upon winning the championship, a player gets to spend a day with the Stanley Cup and can pretty much do whatever they want with it. The rich history of trophies extends to the Green Jacket tradition for the winner of The Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. The green sport coat is the official attire of members of the club, and the ceremony is seen as a passing of the torch as the year's previous winner puts the jacket on the current winner. NASCAR has something similar with its blue blazer for the members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. In some cases, the trophies do a magnificent job of tying the victory hardware to the event's history and heritage. One such place that does that well is Dover International Speedway , site of this weekend's NASCAR national series tripleheader and the headlining event of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks (Sunday, 1 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM). The Delaware track has hosted NASCAR events since 1969 and carries the nickname "The Monster Mile" for its 1-mile oval layout as well as the track's mascot , "Miles the Monster." Miles is on everything from memorabilia, to tickets, to the trophy given to race winners. There's also the Monster Monument in Victory Plaza. The integration of Miles makes the mascot synonymous with everything at Dover on a NASCAR weekend. It's also why the Dover trophy is among the best in all of sports and one of the most unique in NASCAR. PHOTOS: Unique trophies in NASCAR " Miles the Monster trophy requires plenty of space Last year, before yet another win at Dover, Jimmie Johnson described the Dover trophies as ones that "stand out. They're a big trophy and they certainly draw a lot of attention." The Hendrick Motorsports driver should know, as he has the most career premier series wins at Dover (nine entering this weekend). It may not have as much storied history behind it, like winning a grandfather clock at Martinsville Speedway , nor may it carry the prestige of the Harley J. Earl Trophy for winning the season-opening Great American Race, the Daytona 500 . It certainly doesn't taste as good as a win in wine country at Sonoma Raceway or come with food like the lobster winners get at New Hampshire Motor Speedway . But does any other trophy hold the intimidation factor and menacing look that Miles the Monster invokes? In short, no. The trophy balances the right amount of track history, heritage and tradition, while keeping its hardware fun and interesting for the winners to display.
